Why was SMA originally formed?

SMA was formed to provide UA students the opportunity to gain experience in college athletics and the sports marketing industry while providing the Athletics Department assistance in promoting Arizona Athletics, especially to the UA student population.

How many members did SMA have during its first year?

SMA had 50 active members in 1995-96.

More fun facts about SMA:

The Athletics Department ran a classified ad in the Daily Wildcat and posted flyers to attract members to the first meeting. It was promoted as the "Sports Marketing Club" until the second meeting when members moved to change to the name to "Sports Marketing Association" because "it sounded more professional". The original club bylaws were written by modeling after the University of Connecticut's Sports Marketing Club.

In what ways has U of A Marketing Dept's goals changed since the time SMA was established?

While the strategies and scope of what Athletic Department deals with have changed, the goals remain the same: Generate revenue from ticket sales and corporate sponsorships and promote attendance and awareness for our athletics programs.
