Welcome to AMUN

The Arizona Model United Nations is a club devoted to the enrichment and understanding of the world and the many unique cultures that exist within it. Our direct reach is limited to the Southwestern United States; however, our club is merely one element in a global network of Model United Nations that extends into nearly every region on Earth. Together, we work for the same goal of peace and stability in the world.

Our club is involved in numerous activities throughout the year. In the fall we attend a conference in Chicago along with 2,000 other college students. While there we debate the most exigent issues of our time: nuclear proliferation, refugees, unilateral acts of states, national sovereignty, sustainable development, poverty and disease. The real allure of this club is that we debate these issues from a different perspective than our own. From Sudan to Pakistan to Chile, we have represented a variety of countries and cultures at MUN conferences. Whether you agree with their foreign policy and internal affairs is not relevant; the global awareness we seek comes only from unbiased studies and the true understanding of a culture.

In the spring our club attends a second collegiate conference similar to the fall; although our main focus is on organizing and running a high school MUN conference. This conference hosts hundreds of students from around the Southwestern United States and Sonora Mexico. There is a vital role to be filled by every member of club while running this conference; members moderate the debates, give impromptu speeches at request, run the newspaper we put out for delegates, and much more. This conference has rapidly grown over the years and has allowed us to consistently add new aspects to this three day event- among which are a delegate dance and a ceremonial banquet. The high school students debate the same exigent issues as we do in Chicago. Those in the Security Council and Historical Security Council have to deal with an unexpected “emergency crisis”. The crisis begins at an unannounced time on an unannounced issue. As the crisis unfolds the students are continuously tested in their ability to adapt and act fast to the emergency situation. Although, a similar ability is needed in all of the committees where critical debates are a constant.

In short, the Arizona Model United Nations is a versatile club with diverse members and interests. However, there is a binding theme among us all- the hope for a better tomorrow and the will to take action to see that hope realized.
