Human Powered Vechicles

ASME's International Human Powered Vehicle Challenge provides an opportunity for undergraduate engineering students to demonstrate the application of sound engineering design principles in the development of sustainable and practical transportation alternatives. In the HPVC, students work in teams to design and build efficient, highly engineered vehicles for everyday use - from commutuing to work, to carry goods to the market.

Our club is hoping to sponsor one vehicle in the annual ASME Human-powered Vehicle Competition. This project will help teach all participants skills, which can only be learned in a hands-on environment. Class-based learning activities teach students which equations to use and how to approach a problem fundamentally, but application of that information in a real-world setting is rarely presented in such a manner. The University of Arizona’s vehicle design is based on a recumbent bicycle. The current trike features a roll protection system, a carbon fiber fairing to reduce drag forces, and many other custom student designed elements. Modifications in this year’s project will include a new tadpole recumbent frame with several safety features incoporated into the design. The team is pulling all the stops to create the most exciting vehicle the University of Arizona has competed in the ASME HPVC.

Community Outreach

We are currently working on a community outreach project to develop a passion for engineering in local youth. We are developing lesson plans and gathering supplies in order to teach elementary and middle school students basic math and science principles in an interactive way. Our current lesson plans include the basics of rocket science and roller coasters. Calendar & Events

Our club meetings are set for Wednesdays at 5PM in the glass conference room on the 7th floor at AME, starting September 3rd. The first meeting will serve as an introduction for newcomers and a brief overview of what we have planned for the semester. Food will be served so show up before it's all gone! Upcoming events are as follows: September 17th - Guest speakers from the U.S. Navy, October 1st - PhD guest to talk about work in automobile industry. Hope to see everyone there!

2016-2017 Club Officers

Membership is required to vote, hold office and to participate in any UA ASME sponsored competitions and is strongly recommended as there are many benefits available. Membership fees for the student chapter as well as the national ASME organization are due in September of each year and reminders will be announced at the preceeding meetings.
