Clairna Joseph

What is your name, where are you from, and what program of study are you in at the U of A?

My name is Clairna Joseph and I'm from New Jersey. I'm a first year grad student in the School Psychology Ph.D. program here at the U of A. My research interests include the role of self worth in school learning, the assessment and treatment of fears and anxieties in children and the role of ethnicity in child and adolescent peer relations.

What attracted you to Tucson and the University of Arizona?

I applied to a number of schools and different level programs but ultimately made my decision based on the quality of the program, its affordability, and the location.

What are your career aspirations?

I've always loved children and value education. I want to pursue a career where I'll play the role of a child advocate. My goal is to complete this program and grow to assume a leadership position in the research and practice of School Psychology. On a little sidebar, I hope to open a daycare back in my home town someday.

How did you hear about BGSA-UA and what motivated you to join?

I heard about the group through my roommate. At first, I only said I'd join to shut him up. Shortly after joining, however, I realized how much of a benefit it would be for me to be able to network and hangout with other Black graduate students.

Any favorite BGSA-UA activities or experiences?

I always enjoy the BGSA events. I'd say the most fun I've had was at the end of the year elephant gift exchange. The diversity mixer and welcome back bbq are pretty close runners up though.

Of the three pillars that BGSA stands on, which is your favorite and why?

My favorite pillar is fellowship. I only knew one person when I moved out here and thought I was going to have a really hard time settling and making new friends. BGSA made it easy to meet others who I could relate to. I think that BGSA is really supportive of all its members as well as the community and feel secure in knowing I have somewhere to turn to for help regarding academic or even personal concerns.

What are some of your favorite hobbies, pastimes, or things that you do outside of school?

I enjoy watching movies but my favorite pastime, by far, is playing SIMS. I can sit and play on my laptop for hours and not know where all the time has gone. It's very addictive.

Tell us one crazy/funny/weird/unknown thing about yourself.

My lifelong dream is to be a contestant and become a million dollar winner on the game show Deal or No Deal.
